I love its atmosphere, the deep mysterious blacks and glowing whites. I draw into hard ground and then for tone and texture use soft ground, spit bite and aquatint. Following his graduation from KIAD at Medway in 1991, his early freelance employment was found at a London toy company sculpting prototype concepts and production pattern making. By 1995 he had started his sculpture production business supplying interior giftware retailers and galleries with his cold cast metal designs. Over the years, various ranges of sculpture have been produced inspired by his love of Art Nouveau and Gothic, all hand cast and hand finished by Julien.

Aside from his sculptures, Julien has been painting for over 30 years, much of his work imbued with surrealism and symbolism. He is self taught mainly working in oils, developing various layering techniques within works. More recently he's moved over to acrylics, gels and aerosols, exploring reactions within mediums enjoying their ‘happy accidents’. Over time he has diversified through other themes varying from classic Americana to wildlife pieces. His work has sold through a number of solo shows and independent galleries since the early 1990s, many going to international buyers.

Julien days of his work, "I’m a compulsive creator, applied through sculpture and my preference for painting. Since then the collection has grown to include a number of unusual and eye-catching wall and mantle clocks. Along with the allure of artists such as the Pre-Raphaelites, and many of the Visionaries, it is surrealist Salvador Dali who deeply massages my minds creative lava. When I started designing my range of distorted soft clocks, I needed a source to convey my feelings on the abstract transient nature of time and memory. I sought to broaden the aesthetic theme of Dali's soft fob watches from one of the 20th Centuries most iconic images 'The Persistence of Memory'. My range of warped timepieces have provided a scintillating avenue of sculptural forms, one piece triggering the next. Her work focuses on the rural landscape with particular attention to season, pattern and light. Awarded an eight week residency at the Nagasawa Art Institute in Japan, she was one of six international artists to study traditional Japanese water based woodblock printmaking. The unique residency gave her the opportunity to learn from a master woodcarver and a master printer as well as working with Japanese artists, craftsmen and papermakers. The residency has had a profound effect on her work and she is now experimenting with combinations of water and oil based work.

Artist Statement

I am primarily interested by shape and colour. My personal work focuses on rural landscape as I am fascinated by its pattern, light, weather and seasonality. It’s the perfect raw material for me: local, familiar and in a constant state of change.

Printmaking and enamelling are demanding processes and I thrive on the tension between what I want to say and how I can say it within the boundaries of process. I’m at my happiest when I’m exploring and I try never to get too comfortable either with my images or my technical skills. Teaching and sharing skills are an important part of my work and development; I reap huge benefits from working with all levels of learners as well as collaborating with experts.

I’m not so much interested in an accurate depiction of a particular place, more I want to evoke a feel for the familiar and loved, perhaps a type of day or season. Mostly I am looking for ways of saying space and distance, though I’m still working on language for the simpler things too. I want to jog memories in my viewer of places they’ve been, walks they’ve taken or weather they’ve experienced. When I see recognition dawn, I know I’m getting it right.

A Stunning Signed Limited Edition Giclee Print by Mark Duffin.

The mounted size is 42cm x 42cm, and the image size is 31cm x 31cm.

See more work by Mark Duffin

About Mark Duffin

Mark was born in 1960 and grew up in Tilehurst near Reading in Berkshire.
