About Ian Pethers

Ian is an elected member of the Royal Miniature Society and the Society of Botanical Artists.

He was born in London and grew up in the Thames Valley. He took to painting at an early age studying at the local School near Slough and later at night school under artist Jenny Riley at Marlow Community College.

From 1976 to 1989 he worked as a relief lock-keeper on the River Thames, during which time he explored the river and produced over one hundred ink and watercolour paintings.

His first major work was ‘Unloading Coal in Romney Lock’, which was exhibited and sold at the Royal Society of Marine Artists’ Exhibition in the Mall Gallery, London in 1985. In 1989 he was elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists and has recently become a tutor for botanical artists worldwide.

He moved to Cornwall in 1990 and has since illustrated several national hotel guides, designed book covers and has designed posters and maps for the local railway network.
In 2003 Ian was elected a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters and has won two awards for his miniature paintings of woodlands and Cornish mining relics.
