About Jane Tonkin
For more than 25 years Jane has worked to produce beautiful and original prints. Jane employs a range of print techniques to achieve her art including lino-cutting, etching, and screen-printing.
She trained as a textile designer at St. Martins and Central School of Art (now Central St. Martins) and these influences can clearly be discerned in her work through the use of pattern and colour, the themes for which are frequently derived from nature and architecture.
Jane said of her work “I am a big fan of mid-century retro styles and I am inspired by artists as diverse as Matisse and Rex Ray. Experimenting with colour is my on-going passion”
“I enjoy exploring the juxtaposition of different colours and how they relate with one another and the composition as a whole. The use of text is another regular feature in my work. I am very interested in the pattern and form of different fonts and use vintage letterpress blocks as well as handwritten lettering too.”
Jane’s work represents more than three decades experience as an artist and creative force.
Tragically Jane died from cancer on 4th September this year.A percentage of the proceeds of the sale of Jane's work sold online will be donated to her favourite charity, Shelter, and to the Peace Hospice in Watford who cared for Jane.
