About Jane Tonkin
I have been working as a printmaker for over 25 years. I work across different methods in the printmaking discipline, including lino-cutting, etching and screen-printing.
My roots as a textile designer can often be discerned in my work as pattern, especially derived from architecture and nature, features heavily. I’m a big fan of mid-century retro styles and am inspired by artists as diverse as Matisse and Rex Ray.
Colour is my main on-going inspiration however and I enjoy exploring the juxtaposition of different colours and how they relate to each other and the composition as a whole.
The use of text is another regular feature of my work. I’m very interested in the pattern and form of different fonts and use vintage letterpress blocks and handwritten lettering too.
