About Brian Bennett PPROI

Brian Bennett is a Past President and an elected Fellow of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

He was taught English at school by Peter Greenham R.A, who inspired him to become a painter. He paints in oils with a knife, mostly landscapes of Chilterns, where he lives, concentrating on wild flowers that grow on the chalk and on the wide panoramic views from the escarpment.

Having obtained an MA in History at Magdalene College Oxford he was later appointed Director of Art at Berkhamsted School, despite having no formal Art training.  A decision that has long since proved to be justified. He regularly exhibits at the Royal Academy and has exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists, the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the National Society.

Brian paints almost exclusively with a painting knife (not a palette knife) which he modifies to his own requirements. He prefers to work on site despite the often very strong prevailing South Western winds. Of course, large pieces are produced in the studio, based on sketches and smaller outdoor work. He finds photographs are of limited value compared with experience and memory, although he does take them. Large and more studied work may require pencil sketches to confirm the composition, but generally he just brushes a few compositional marks with very dilute paint on the canvas before he begins, in earnest, with his knife.
