About Claire Howlett
Claire lives in Berkshire. She studied art to A Level and then was accepted at Oxford Brookes on an art foundation course. Following her parent’s divorce, Claire had to leave education and took a job training as a fine art restorer.
Life then took a different path and Claire didn’t really paint until about 8 years ago when a one day painting course had very positive results and feedback, resulting in one of Claire’s paintings being bought by Greenwich library. Since then she developed her painting style , “through instinct and trial and error”. has exhibited widely over the last few years in several galleries in the South and South West.
In 2011 one of her paintings was featured on “Show Me The Monet” on BBC TV.
Claire says of her work, “My initial inspiration is generally derived from the natural world- a shard of light, a tumultuous sea, an early morning walk.”
“I follow the emotion generated by that inspiration when putting paint on canvas. It is not a preconceived idea, more evolving as it grows, intuitive more than planned. This stops any constraints limiting the flow of paint and creativity.”
“My aim is to capture the evocative elements of our landscape that can transcend the materialistic and harsh world we can find ourselves in today and transport the viewer to a calmer, perhaps more spiritual place.
Van Gogh strived to capture the ‘eternity’ of things. I emphasise with this statement.”
“My paintings are in acrylic on canvas or board, sometimes incorporating other mediums, as the painting dictates.”
