Val Johnson: Artist Statement & Biography
I am Yorkshire born and my connection with art started early – I especially enjoyed the art lessons at school.
I had to leave school at 16 in order to work and I originally started training to be a nurse until I found I could learn to be a teacher with a grant! So, I then wanted to explore the excitement of London and to start my first job as a teacher. After many years teaching, I took a sabbatical and chose to study children who required special tuition; after which, I was given the job of starting small groups for these children. This work lasted for some 20 odd years until the powers that be, started struggling with the funding, of this work.
I retired soon after and decided to take on a counselling course with Goldsmith’s in London and eventually had my own practice, counselling adults.
I have always enjoyed sketching and painting and this helped enormously with the children I taught and some of the people I met in the counselling sessions.
I attended some art night classes to explore/learn more about painting, in addition I was very inspired by a wonderful teacher, name of Margaret Merritt. She now teaches in Wales but when I met Margaret, she was providing some excellent tuition for two weeks every year, at Horniman’s Museum in London, using the grounds and the huge conservatory there.
I tend to paint large – sometimes canvas, sometimes paper. I have painted in life classes and also enjoy painting landscapes and still life – I have run the gauntlet of watercolour, pastels, acrylics, mixed media, dyes and anything to hand…. am now exploring a mixture of all. What fun!
