Obsidian Art’s latest exhibition, "The Art of Poetry", takes its inspiration from the written word, featuring art created from poetry.
This exciting exhibition includes a wonderful range of art including paintings, original printmaking, glass, photography and sculpture by selected artists and makers from all over the country.
The exhibition was inspired by World Book Night, an annual event launched in 2011 with the aim of encouraging reading. Artists were invited to submit pieces that had been inspired from poetry. The resulting exhibition displays the selected art alongside the poem that inspired it, and includes a huge variety of both mediums and styles, and a span of poetry including classics such as Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Blake, and also contemporary pieces. Gallery owner, Trisha Woodcock, says, “There was a great response to our call for entries for this exhibition; many artists found it an inspiring theme top create a piece of art for, and we’re really excited by the resulting show. We ran this themed exhibition for the first time last year and found the response from visitors was really positive.”
“Displaying the poems alongside the art adds an extra element beyond a normal art exhibition, and it is fascinating to see how the artists have selected and interpreted poetry. Poems selected for the show include humour, life and love. Hopefully there is something to make you pause and contemplate.”
Fifty British artists and makers have been selected to take part in the exhibition from over two hundred entries. Local artists taking part include ceramicists Jeremy White and Peter Stocker, glass artist, Tlws Johnson, mosaic-artist, Deborah Brett, photographers Adrian Hobbs and Pirjo Keene, wood-carver, Mick Waterhouse and painters Jan Ruddock, Tony Ashton, Brenda Hurley, and Antonia Glynne Jones,
The exhibition, “The Art of Poetry”, is on at Obsidian Art, The Bucks Goat Centre, Stoke Mandeville, Bucks, HP22 5XJ from Friday 21 March until Wednesday 23 April. The gallery is open daily, from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 12Noon to 4pm on Sundays. Entry is free and all work is for sale.
