About Maxine Hunt
As one of Britain’s up-and-coming female blacksmiths, Maxine Hunt specialises in combining the unique elements of both wood and metal, to create beautiful, contemporary and highly individual pieces.
Maxine graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 1999, with a degree in Three Dimensional Design and then set-up her own workshop as a designer-maker, specialising in contemporary wood and ironwork.
Initially starting out as a designer-maker using mainly wood, not content with just working in one material, she fulfilled a long standing passion for blacksmithing by enrolling for a college course.
This introduced a whole new dynamic to Maxine’s work, and after learning to weld, she began to forge a new collection of work. This was largely gardenware, including everything from small items such as obelisks and plant supports to larger work such as sculptures, benches, gates and railings.
Maxine’s main passion, however, is furniture. Maxine, says, “I think it’s the desire to create something beautiful, that still performs well in its function… something that can stand alone in its sculptural form, yet can function on an everyday level.”
All her work is very contemporary in design – she likes to use traditional crafts to produce items that are fitting to today’s contemporary craft scene. Each item is designed and crafted by Maxine. Work can either be bought from her current range or can be arranged on a commission basis through the gallery.
