About Helen Abbott - Artist Biography

Helen studied art for a number of years in Yorkshire (Jacob Kramer college, now Leeds Arts University, North Riding College and Leeds University) Helen now lives in Milton Keynes but is originally from Kippax near Leeds.

If you’ve known the love and company of an animal or have a favorite animal, then her art helps you to appreciate them in a personal and unique way. Helen’s art is not limited to domestic animals but the wildlife of our world. We share this planet but many species are becoming more and more endangered (this applies to both domestic and wild animals) Animal paintings can celebrate the beauty and diversity of the natural world while serving as a reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation, raising awareness about endangered species and their habitats.

Although Helen paints quite traditional style paintings in oil on canvas or wooden panel, she also paints on vintage music. Why music? Helen’s Grandfather and Gt Grandfather were both military musicians with the Scots Greys (Boer War and World War 1) She also learned the violin when at school in Yorkshire and continues to play in local orchestras. Music is a family affair with her daughters having studied music and now playing across the UK and beyond.

Music gives another level of meaning to the subject of her paintings. This can be through the title, the words of the song or the sound of the music. In some of her paintings the music is chosen with the subject in mind. Music is very emotional and everyone has memories associated with the many melodies and sounds that are heard.

Helen studied Fine Art under John Jones at Leeds University and is a member of the Association of Animal Artists with whom she has exhibited several times
