About Tracy Smith

I am a self-taught fibre artist with a lifelong involvement in the creative arts, through teaching, making and performing. I now specialise in ‘painting with wool’ through the process of felting.

Each piece I create begins with a photo of a landscape, a park, a beach….., somewhere or something that is familiar and meaningful to me. I work almost exclusively with natural fibres, primarily merino wool and mulberry silk. These I blend and form into images which are then wet felted. Once dry, further details are added with needle felting and stitching by machine and by hand. Each picture is then professionally photographed ready for the option of giclee printing. I love the whole process. It frees me. It is slow and peaceful; it calms and steadies me. It challenges and teaches me at every turn. The patterns and intricacies formed by the fibres are as many and varied as snowflakes. They make each work unique and impossible to repeat.
