A One Day ‘Introduction to Charcoal Realism in Animals’ with Artist, Becky Gouverneur.

To be held by Obsidian Art at Brises Farmhouse in Swanbourne MK17 0SL

Saturday 5th September

10.00 am to 4.00pm (incl, 1 hour break for lunch)

Suitable for: Adult 18+   Ages: 16 & 17 also welcome but must be accompanied by an 18+ adult.

The course is suitable for complete beginners to drawing as well as artists with experience drawing in other media who wish to explore using charcoal.

 

You will be provided with the Reference Image, Drawing Paper and Printed Resources.

It will be necessary for participants to bring charcoal and blending materials – a full list of resources for participants to bring will be specified upon booking. If you don’t already have the resources &/or you don’t want to purchase from a stockist then material packs can be purchased on the day for £35.

 

By the end of the workshop you will have drawn a small charcoal study of a cat’s face to take away.

Becky is not only, an exceptionally skilled artist but also a skilled tutor - known for her friendly, fun, and approachable teaching style, breaking down complex techniques into clear, simple steps that students can confidently follow and apply in their own work. Her workshops focus on building both technical skill and artistic understanding, helping students see as well as draw.

 

We are delighted to offer a workshop by Becky that will give you a basic introduction to the materials and techniques used to create realistic charcoal drawings of furry creatures.

 

Under the expert guidance of professional artist and tutor, Becky Gouverneur, you will work through a series of introductory tasks and structured exercises to learn and practice the techniques demonstrated. After this you will put these skills into practice creating a small study of a cat’s face to take away with you.

 

Skills Covered:

  • Block & blend method – creating smooth tonal transitions in charcoal
  • Subtraction methods – what to use and how to do it
  • Working with tone – identifying and accurately portraying tonal values
  • Drawing accuracy – strategies and methods to see & improve shape and form

 

Becky is a professional artist and fully qualified teacher, bringing over 15 years of experience of teaching art across all age groups, from complete beginners to developing artists. Alongside her teaching, she works as a practising artist, specialising in highly detailed animal portraiture in charcoal, graphite, and pastel. In addition, Becky is currently working on an upcoming book with Search Press on Drawing Animals in Charcoal, further cementing her reputation as a leading voice in contemporary charcoal practice. Becky regularly exhibits her work and shares her techniques through demonstrations, workshops, and publications.

Payment of £90 required at the time of booking. Please note that we will only be able to run this workshop if we have a minimum of 8 people. If we do not reach this capacity and need to cancel then we will give you a minimum of two weeks notice and a full refund.

 

If you book the workshop and are unable to attend then if you can find someone to take your place we will offer you a full refund. If you are not able to find someone to take your place then:

      If you provide 30 days notice or more we will offer you a credit note for the full amount of the workshop towards another workshop.

·   If you cancel less then 30 days in advance then we will offer you a credit note for 50% of the cost of your workshop towards another workshop or to spend towards pieces on our website.

Accessibility

We like to be as inclusive as possible but the Farmhouse was built in the 16th Century and has some steps and narrow doorways. If have mobility issues please contact us in advance of booking to discuss - wheelchair users can be accommodated with advance notice but we do not have disabled toilet facilities.
