About Coloured Leads

Also know as coloured pencils  - the origin of using coloured pencils dates back to the early Greeks and also the Roman, Pliny the Elder.   They are oil/wax based and are made up of three components which are pigments, additives and a binding agent and today's pigments are lightfast, so they last well.   Sally says, "I use them in the same way as watercolour, layering up but they are a lot more flexible in how I lay them down".

About Sally Leggatt

Born and brought up in countryside in Ayrshire, Scotland, Sally was educated in Scotland and Yorkshire and now lives on a farm in rural Buckinghamshire. Sally specialises in wildlife and equestrian art. She works in watercolour and mixed media on a variety of surfaces, including aluminium and old Welsh slate.

In the 1970s she lived in rural Northumberland with close links to countryside and horse racing, and sold wildlife paintings through restaurants and galleries. Moving to Buckinghamshire, Sally spent ten years as an artist in motorsport, mainly World Sportscars, Formula 1 and Historic Grand Prix Cars.

Sally works on private and corporate commissions and current work is based on farming and countryside subjects. She has exhibited in London, Oxford and Edinburgh galleries as well as regularly at Obsidian Art.
