About Julien Hatswell
Julien Hatswell is an artist and designer based in Canterbury, Kent. Following his graduation from KIAD at Medway in 1991, his early freelance employment was found at a London toy company sculpting prototype concepts and production pattern making. By 1995 he had started his sculpture production business supplying interior giftware retailers and galleries with his cold cast metal designs. Over the years, various ranges of sculpture have been produced inspired by his love of Art Nouveau and Gothic, all hand cast and hand finished by Julien.
Aside from his sculptures, Julien has been painting for over 30 years, much of his work imbued with surrealism and symbolism. He is self taught mainly working in oils, developing various layering techniques within works. More recently he's moved over to acrylics, gels and aerosols, exploring reactions within mediums enjoying their ‘happy accidents’. Over time he has diversified through other themes varying from classic Americana to wildlife pieces. His work has sold through a number of solo shows and independent galleries since the early 1990s, many going to international buyers.
Julien days of his work, "I’m a compulsive creator, applied through sculpture and my preference for painting. Its the foundation of my sense of purpose, finding a satisfying freedom experimenting with themes and styles".
About Julien Hatswell's clocks
The first clock was introduced in early 2003. Since then the collection has grown to include a number of unusual and eye-catching wall and mantle clocks. Along with the allure of artists such as the Pre-Raphaelites, and many of the Visionaries, it is surrealist Salvador Dali who deeply massages my minds creative lava. When I started designing my range of distorted soft clocks, I needed a source to convey my feelings on the abstract transient nature of time and memory. I sought to broaden the aesthetic theme of Dali's soft fob watches from one of the 20th Centuries most iconic images 'The Persistence of Memory'. My range of warped timepieces have provided a scintillating avenue of sculptural forms, one piece triggering the next. The Timewarp clocks are a rich vein that I'll continue to tap, until a saturation of ideas overloads the shelves storing moulds in my workshop!
