Artist Statement

What were the skies like when you were young? A thought I return to most days. These ethereal dreamlike memories are what I try to capture in my paintings. One of my childhood memories, lying in an uncut hay field watching the clouds move across the sky, changing the landscape and myself within it. Images become abstract, they are no longer a picture but line, colour and the spaces in between. Clouds, sunset, sunrise, vast open spaces of colour and movement all capture and release emotion for me. I enjoy the way clouds hide the landscape allowing glimpses of what is behind, how they gently reveal their secrets. How does light frame the landscape? Which emotions and feelings does it resonate with? Can I capture those feelings to uplift your spirits or reflect an inner turmoil?

About Nicky Greenshields

Nicky grew up in rural Worcestershire and enjoyed country life, horses and farming.

After leaving school in 1990 she went to study Geology at Manchester University gaining a 2:1 hons degree. There then followed a few years of Greenpeace activism and work at the BBC as a Production Assistant in what was then the live TV Department working on programmes like Newsnight, Blue Peter and the Holiday show.

In 1997 Nicky left corporate life to embark on her creative career at Camberwell College of Art. Firstly studying a Foundation Course and then in 1998 starting a BA Visual Arts Ceramics Degree. Gaining a 2:1 in 2001 Nicky left to become a Mum and moved to Buckinghamshire. Since then she has done many online courses, week long courses at Newlyn School of Art and St Ives School of Art, but is in the main, a self taught painter.
