Deborah Humm - Artist Statement

I have participated in exhibitions and film events nationwide, with my poetry books included in private collections. Throughout both my Degree and Master of Fine Art, for which I was awarded a full scholarship, I explored the complexities of the human condition, focusing particularly on the nuanced communication challenges associated with Multiple Sclerosis—a condition I experience first-hand.

I developed an innovative drawing technique that employs my body as a seismograph, recording subtle biorhythms such as coughing, sneezing, fidgeting, sighing, yawning, and twitching. This method produces unique line drawings whose abstract forms encourage introspection during the colouring process, actively promoting relaxation of the autonomic nervous system.

To complete each artwork, I apply my artistic judgment layering these drawings. Alternatively, digitising them and removing the background allows me to experiment with transparency and scale, combining multiple drawings within a single composition. The final pieces can be professionally printed on a wide range of contemporary media.

Expanding upon this concept, I translate the drawings into three-dimensional sketches rendered in space, giving physical form to transient thoughts and unfinished ideas.  Continually testing the limits of each medium while investigating the nature of thought and creativity, I’m currently turning drawings into origami flowers and embroideries.

I believe having fun with my work an important aspect.

I am also a fully trained psychotherapist and use this technique as creative therapy in private sessions and workshops for children and adults, one of which was at the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in Edinburgh with Patients of MS.
