Walking the Chilterns by Marie Jones

A stunning Chiltern themed textile piece in soft shades of greens, blues and yellows. This small format is unframed and mounted on card. It is beautifully and richly coloured and made by hand using a needlefelt technique in wool felt with textile and embroidery embellishment.

I am a self-taught fibre artist with a passion for wool crafts- there is always something new to learn.

Developing my skills over recent years has been an adventure. I now enjoy participating in art fairs and exhibitions across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Taking part in Bucks Art Weeks for the first time, has been a major highlight in 2022, exhibiting in the Focus on Textiles show and teaching workshops at Queens Park Art Centre, Aylesbury.

My background has been academic with a career in science- diagnostic medical genetics and cancer research. However, I have always been creative with a tendency to daydream! A change in personal circumstances and a move from Scotland to Buckinghamshire, has provided the opportunity to explore a different path.

 What I Do

Having hopped, skipped and jumped form one medium to another, I finally landed on “painting with wool.” Wool is an extremely versatile material in all its forms and lends itself to expressing the textures and colours of nature around us, much like watercolour or acrylic paint.

 I use natural and dyed wool fibres such as Merino and Corriedale and speciality fibres such as silk to create my pictures. Once layered on a fabric or felt base, they are wet felted using hot water and soap or dry felted with a barbed needle. Both methods “knit” and bind the fibres together to make the artwork.  Depth and texture are then added by machine stitching and hand embroidery using a variety of yarns and threads and integrated snippets of textile. It is a labour intensive process. 

 Inspiration

I’m at my happiest when wandering outdoors, up and down hill, dale and shore line. That’s where my inspiration lies: big skies; immense rocky hills stirring up cloud drama; rough coastlines to take the breath away; gentle rolling hills as far as the eye can see.

I am obsessed with the challenge of capturing that sense of space and light.
